The Suicide Squad, a reboot of the movie Suicide Squad released in 2016, set in the DC Universe, will hit the theaters in the United States this week. A retake on the 2016 edition of the film, which left the audience with a rather bad taste 5 years ago, is thought to be made to change the audience’s perception of the production.
THE MUCH-AWAITED REBOOT
James Gunn’s DC reboot and sort-of sequel to the critically-derided first movie was confusingly called “Suicide Squad,” completed production in February 2021. So it’s now only a matter of few days to wait and see if it is actually worth its time and hype, which has already been one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
The movie is supposedly a whole lot better than its so-termed “prequel” or first take, shall we say, primarily because the production company Warner Brothers virtually gave the director James Gunn full liberty to use his imagination and creativity in the production. “They gave very few notes – they were usually good and minor, and I took them if I wanted to and didn’t if I didn’t want to. Warners was creatively amazing.”, said Gunn.
As we have already seen with both the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, a creatively free Gunn is a fascinating prospect when it comes to DC’s collection of anti-heroes. So we can expect The Suicide Squad to be of similar standards or even better, with more action and violence that the franchise practically thrives on.
THE PLOT
As the company has already released trailers and teasers on the internet and we have seen the first movie, we do not expect to see many changes in the storyline. However, the first footage released is quite fascinating as it encapsulates the viewers in a moment that we all had been waiting for.
“Welcome to hell – aka Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out – even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X,” the footage reads.
The plot revolves around a group of bandits and villains assembled as a crew to go on a mission on a remote island that leaves everyone’s jaws dropped.
“Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.”, the feature footage reveals.
Producer Peter Safran has revealed that on Corto Maltese island, the group has to “destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory named Jotunheim, where political prisoners were held, and experimentations took place.”
Director Gunn went on to add that “some horrid secrets are revealed” in the island that is sure to leave the audience in shock.
PRODUCTION TEAM CONFIDENT ABOUT PERFORMANCE AND QUALITY
“I felt like it really transcended the genre and became something bigger, and then it’s also ridiculous, and ridiculous in many ways, and super violent. Just gory almost at times.” Star Joel Kinnaman said, stating that he believes it’s Gunn’s best creation yet.
When asked if the movie contradicts the storyline of the first movie, James Gunns said that it is set in a different timeline and is not related to the first movie to create confusion in the audience.
“Um, it’s its own thing. It does not contradict the first movie; I don’t think. It might help in some small ways… I don’t know.“, said Gunn.
But as long as we have characters like Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller, who cares so much about contradictions in the plot? The movie itself encapsulates an entire story that will leave everyone hanging on the edge of their seats.
The Batman Movie: Release date, Cast, Trailer and More
THE CAST
James Gunn revealed the star-studded cast for The Suicide Squad back in September 2019, when he said that Margot Robbie would be returning as the fan-favorite Harley Quinn and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Joel Kinnaman is playing the role of Rick Flag, and Jai Courtney is portraying Captain Boomerang. In addition, the Avengers and Thor actor Idris Elba is going as Bloodsport with a surprise addition of WWE Superstar John Cena as Peacemaker.
NO JOKER IN THE SQUAD
We have noticed the lack of The Joker, which was played by Jared Leto in the earlier edition of the movie but apart from that, the stellar cast is set to captivate its audience for the entirety of the film. Other names featuring in the movie are Peter Capaldi, Alica Brag, Storm Reid, and more.
“No-one but me and a few others know all the characters in the movie, but if the Joker isn’t in the film, I don’t think it would be strange as he isn’t a part of the Suicide Squad in the comics.”, said Jame Gunn via an Instagram post.
WHAT DOES THE CAST SAY?
The film supposedly has many shocking moments but does not lack comedy. “It has shocking moments, but they are very comedic. At the end of the movie, it’s completely normal seeing this giant shark just standing gnawing on a person’s head, and some of the people just having a conversation next to it.”, said Joel Kinnaman, who goes as Rick Flag in the movie.
John Cena was blunt as a knife when revealing what fans can expect from the movie, saying, “The Suicide Squad is gonna make you shit your pants, so bring a change of pants.”
Margot Robbie has also talked about how her unique character, Harley Quinn, has changed since Birds of Prey and went on to say that she’s a “catalyst of chaos” in the new movie.
Heaping praises on Robbie’s performance, Gunn said that he wrote the “biggest action scene I’ve ever done” for Harley Quinn. “It’s probably my favorite four minutes of film I’ve ever shot before,” he added.
THE RELEASE
Unlike many other blockbusters, The Suicide Squad’s release date has remained right on its track despite the COVID 19 pandemic. Having already been released in the United Kingdom on July 30, the movie is set to come to the US theaters on August 5 and HBO Max a month after the release in the cinemas.
The movie certified with an obvious R rating in the US is cited for having “strong violence and gore, language throughout, some sexual references, and drug use” along with “brief graphic nudity.”
AUDIENCE RESPONSE
The audience in the UK has already poured in their praises for the movie, saying it was better than the 2016 version of the movie directed by David Ayer. Despite lacking the Joker, the movie has performed well above people’s expectations. It has already gained a rating of 96% approval on Rotten Tomatoes and 8/10 on IMDB, while its predecessor fared only 26% on Rotten Tomatoes and 5.9/10 on IMDB.
