Ex-pats Facebook page sparks craze for Auld Ayr memories

A CIRCUS entertainer who started a Facebook page about Ayr has reunited thousands of people.

Stunned Dave Moore has seen his site, detailing memories of the town in the 1970s and ‘80s, go viral on the net.

And within days of launching, more than 2500 people had signed up to share old pictures and stories.

The page, called “Growing Up In Lochside, Dalmilling, Whitletts and Remembering Auld Ayr,” has become an overnight sensation.

And Dave laughed: “It’s like our own mini version of the Ayrshire Post.”

Within hours of posting his old pictures online, Dave was joined by a stream of fellow Facebook members who saw his page.

He admitted: “I’ve been totally shocked by the response.

“The page was only intended for family and friends after I came across some old photos of my time growing up in Ayr.

“I thought that posting them on Facebook would be a good way of sharing those memories.

“The next time I went online, the page was flooded with new members and now I’m barely sleeping because I’m so busy keeping up-to-date with the site.”

Members have been reliving the glory days of the town and posting some vintage photos to spark a walk down memory lane.

Now there’s even talk of reinstating a Gala Day for site members to enjoy a reunion.

Dave, 42, said: “I left Ayr in 1990 and have been working in Blackpool ever since – but I never forgot Ayr because I absolutely loved it.

“Watching everyone share their memories on this page has been brilliant and people who lost touch for 20 or 30 years have been finding each other again.

“We now live in an era where community spirit seems to have gone, no matter what part of the country you live in.

“But this page has restored my faith and has definitely rekindled something very special.”
