Kalvin Phillips struggles as world-class Jude Bellingham excels

June 2024 · 4 minute read

England have qualified for Euro 2024 after goals from Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford guided them to a 3-1 win against Italy in their Group C match at Wembley.

Telegraph Sport runs the rule over the performances after a strong second half by the hosts.

England (4-2-3-1)

Jordan Pickford

Excellent save to deny Udogie on the stroke of half-time, after being left with no chance for Italy’s goal. His long, flat kick to wingers should be used more. 7/10

Kyle Walker

Showed his speed and experience with a recovery run to stop Frattesi in a dangerous position. An outlet down the right but sometimes pinned back. 7/10

John Stones

Has not started a game for Manchester City this season and needs to build up his rhythm. Threw himself bravely into challenges to block Italian shots. 6/10

Harry Maguire

Did well in his duels and engaging in a physical battle with Scamacca suited him. Dragged to the near post for the opener and blocked his marker off. 7/10

Kieran Trippier

Put in a good cross for Rashford’s header which was saved. Could have done with more support defensively as Italy were raiding down his flank. 6/10

Declan Rice

Broke up attacks early and kept the ball moving. Mature performance showed how much he has grown in two years since the Euro final. 7/10

Kalvin Phillips

Shot over the bar in the second half as he got more into the game but could do with more games as he was lucky not to be sent off with mistimed tackles. BOOKED 6/10

Marcus Rashford

Would never know he was short of confidence recently from the way he finished England’s second goal. It was the Rashford of last season after going close earlier with a header. 7/10

Jude Bellingham

Makes the difference to this England team. Too quick for Di Lorenzo when he won the penalty, then broke clear to set up Rashford after winning the ball earlier in the move. 9/10

Phil Foden

Got in good areas to attack Italy and also in his own territory to set up move for Rashford’s goal. Had a good penalty shout turned down in the second half and drifted inside to impact play. 7/10

Harry Kane

Endured a long Var wait for penalty and took it well. Brings others into play with his No10 work and grafts for his team as the first line of defence. Rewarded with a second goal. 8/10

Subs: Guehi 62 (Stones), Henderson 69 (Phillips) Grealish 85 (Bellingham)
Not used: Johnstone (g), Ramsdale (g), Dunk, Colwill, Alexander-Arnold, Gallagher, Watkins, Maddison, Bowen

Italy (4-3-3)

Gianluigi Donnarumma

Started the move for the opening goal and was involved often with saves to deny England. Rooted to the spot for the Rashford goal, possibly his sight was blocked. 6/10

Giovanni Di Lorenzo

Assist for Scamacca’s goal with a low cross but he was also caught when Bellingham ran through. It was correct to award a penalty. BOOKED 6/10

Giorgio Scalvini

Clash of heads with Bellingham which caused a delay. Caught terribly for Kane’s second goal from open play, leaving his team exposed. BOOKED 4/10

Francesco Acerbi

Plenty of fouls from the veteran defender before he was taken off in the second half after his defence was breached for a second time. Was a tough competitor. 5/10

Destiny Udogie

Showed both sides of his game. Good game-management to take booking for the Foden foul. Broke forward well but flat-footed when Rashford scored. BOOKED 6/10

Davide Frattesi

Good work to draw Phillips into a booking and was playing well when Italy were on top of the game in the first half, his airshot creating a chance for the goal. 5/10

Bryan Cristante

Plenty of energy in the middle of the park and but could not keep Bellingham under control as England came into the match after conceding. 5/10

Nicolo Barella

Very neat on the ball and shifted possession to his team-mates quickly but would have liked to have more impact in dangerous areas of the pitch. 6/10

Domenico Berardi

His excellent ball down the line split the England defence and set up the first goal after team move that saw ball go from back to front in seconds. 5/10

Gianluca Scamacca

Taken off in the second half but was the most dangerous Italy player, taking his goal well in the 15th minute but also going close with other efforts. 7/10

Stephan El Shaarawy

Struggled to get past Walker as he was matched for pace by the veteran full-back. Would have liked to have seen more of the ball. 4/10

Subs: Bastoni 63 (Acerbi), Dimarco 63 (Udogie), Kean 63 (Scamacca), Raspadori 78 (Berardi), Orsolini 87 (El Shaarawy)
Not used: Vicario (g), Meret (g), Gatti, Locatelli, Bonaventura, Darmian, Mancini, Orsolini
