Kanye Accused Of Copying Concept for Video in 2011

June 2024 · 3 minute read

Remember that Yeezy video with the epileptic seizure warning at the beginning?

Rapper Kanye West is no stranger to being in the limelight or being the headline of a newstory. When we hear about him we wonder what he’s done now.

This time he’s being accused of stealing. No not from the store or anything like that, but of being a concept thief. Yes, that’s right the self proclaimed visionary hubby of Kim K is being accused of ripping someone else’s concept.

Argentinian born, French resident and film director Gaspar Noé recentlty brought up a slight discrepancy. He is saying something about the striking similarities between Kanye West’s 2011 video “All Of The Lights” directed by Hype Williams. What some are even calling a straight copy or “rip off” of the title sequence to French Director Gaspar Noé’s  beginning sequence to his 2009 film“Enter The Void”.

Which sparks the question, how many video’s have we seen that look alike conceptually or have even stolen the idea of someone’s work?

As the saying goes though “There’s nothing new under the sun”.

Similar to how Kanye takes old 70’s tracks and remixes them into chart topping beats for songs, this is nothing different.

This seems to happen more than not with any form of artistry these days though.

Whether it’s music, video, art, sculpture or motion picture there seems to be similarities sometime. It may be understandable that he didn’t pay homage seeing as though he only stole the concept of the opening credits.

Kanye West has been hit with lawsuit after lawsuit from hitting Paparazzi to his most recent that was settled in May of this year where he was accused of sampling R&B singer Rickey Spicer’s voice. Clearly we see it’s the same typography and flashing multicolor lights

Clearly when you see the video clips, it’s the same typography being used in both with the flashing multicolor lights, words of lyrics flashing in fluorescent syncopation to the beat

It was said that Noé was more offended by the fact that Ye and Williams took full credit.

According to the following quote from Rolling Stone Magazine, “I was more shocked by the fact that that guy who copied all the typography of my titles put his name in it — Hype Williams — when you never usually see a director’s name in a music video,” Noé said. “He was putting his name on it over and over! It was so weird that he was not only copying it, but adding his name into the credits over and over again.”

Do we feel Kanye being hit with yet another lawsuit? Will he apologize or respond to accusations? Highly doubted.

Rapper A$AP Rocky’s video “L$D” has a similar feel with the illumination and exaggeration of neon lights, but not a total copy.
