Kofi Kingston has been through lot in WWE, and that includes his character presentation. He is a proud member of the New Day now, but there was a time when he had to slap on a thick accent that wasn’t his own to make it on WWE television.
Kofi Kingston recently confirmed speculation that he faced repercussions from WWE when Triple H confronted him on live television regarding his diminishing Jamaican accent. On fan tweeted out to share a version of the story that they had heard.
The story I heard was this was during a time when Kayfabe was still around, and apparently Vince or one of the other company guys had called Kofi and Kofi answered with no accent. So this was a way to embarrass him on tv.
Kofi Kingston confirmed this fan’s story by replying: “A time long ago, when Kayfabe was still around…” He also included an LOL emoji for good measure.
After signing with WWE in 2006, Kofi Kingston spent about a year in developmental before making his debut on the main roster in 2007 with a Jamaican character. Kingston was actually born in Ghana and raised in Boston. He used that Jamaican accent on television, which was eventually phased out. In a notorious segment in 2009, Triple H called out Kingston regarding his disappearing accent.
This was obviously a bit that stuck with Kofi Kingston. Fans also really appreciated the call-out, because they probably wondered what happened to that accent as well. Thankfully, WWE hasn’t reverted to that accent for Kofi Kingston again.
We’ll have to see when Kofi Kingston returns from injury. At this time, Xavier Woods is the only member of the New Day who is actively able to perform. If anything, we know that Kofi Kingston won’t return with that Jamaican accent again.
