Mandy Moore: This parenting thing is weird and hard

June 2024 · 3 minute read

Mandy Moore is the mother to two adorable little boys, Gus, two, and Ozzie, nine months. The This Is Us actress is pretty candid in interviews and on social media about her parenting journey, sharing things like how difficult it is to have had two babies under two and the process of potty training. Over the weekend, Mandy revealed via Instagram Story that last month, Gus woke up with a “crazy rash” that took visits to urgent care, a pediatrician, a dermatologist, and a pediatric dermatologist to figure out what was causing it. Thankfully, doctors were able to give Gus a diagnosis and a positive prognosis.

Mandy Moore is opening about a family health scare.

The This Is Us alum took to social media to share an incident that landed her family in multiple doctor offices on July 22. She revealed that her and husband Taylor Goldsmith’s 2-year-old son Gus woke up that morning with an unexplained rash, and medical professionals were unable to immediately determine its cause.

“This sweet boy woke up with a crazy rash on Saturday am,” Mandy wrote alongside a picture of Gus on her July 28 Instagram story. “We tried to deduce what it could be and did anything to help him find relief from the itch.”

She added that despite bringing Gus to a pediatrician, dermatologist and pediatric dermatologist, the young boy was all “smiles and laughs like the rockstar he is.”

Thankfully, doctors were eventually able to identify the skin condition.

“Turns out it’s a viral childhood rash that just spontaneously appears called Gianotti-Crosti syndrome,” the 39-year-old wrote over an image of the toddler’s legs covered in red splotches. “It’s all over his legs and feet (ouch) and the backs of his arms but nowhere else.”

Gianotti-Crosti syndrome is a rare skin condition affecting kids, usually through blisters on the legs, butt and arms, according to the National Institutes of Health.

The Princess Diaries actress revealed that Gus has a little bit of a healing journey ahead as the only treatment for the rash is Benadryl and steroid cream—and it could still last 6-8 weeks.

She finished the series with a reflection on motherhood, adding, “All of that to say, this parenting thing is weird and hard and sometimes you feel so helpless (and yes I’m ever so grateful it’s only an itchy skin condition).”

But she said she and the Dawes frontman are happy to take a cue from rockstar Gus, musing, “Kids are resilient and as long as he’s smiling through it, we are a-okay.”

Poor Gus! Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome sounds intense. Being itchy is no fun, no matter what age you are. It sounds like Gus is a real trooper, though! Still, it’s always tough watching your child in pain or being uncomfortable and not having a magic cure to make it all better.

Parenting is weird and hard, and there are periods when it feels like there’s always *something.* At the same time, it can also be wonderful and rewarding. I really appreciate that Mandy keeps it real without making it sound like she’s always complaining, miserable, or being dramatic. She posted an update a few days ago that Gus is doing better and eating his oatmeal like a “champ.” I hope Gus’s rash completely clears up soon, and that all is quiet in the Moore-Goldsmith household for a while!
