Benjamin Gamond, a rugby player for Club Tala in Argentina, died after being attacked with a machete and suffering a skull fracture in Oaxaca, Mexico.
The 23-year-old Argentinean, who suffered hypovolemic shock, was taken by helicopter to the General Hospital in Mexico City, where he passed away.
"The Gamond family informs with immense pain the sad news that Benja did not make it," a family statement read.
"The miracle did not happen. The efforts were enormous, like his strength and heart, but it was not enough. We are infinitely grateful for all the help, collaboration, support and love received. And we ask you to understand the moment and to respect the family's pain".
The Tala Rugby Club also released a statement to confirm their player's death.
"With deep sorrow we inform that minutes ago our dear 'Benja' Gamond passed away," the statement read.
"We embrace and accompany his mother, his brothers and all his family, his friends and all the black and white community in this very sad moment."

The Argentinean press reported that Gamond had his back turned when a man attacked him with a machete without saying a word and for no apparent reason at a restaurant on a beach at Laguna de Chacahua in the village of Tututepec.
In the same attack his two companions were injured. One suffered a broken arm and the other a cut and a fractured humerus. The assailant, who was identified as Cruz Irving Martinez Flores, was arrested by police.
